Choosing what to pack for a trip can be hard enough, but as the weather gets cooler and the layers get chunkier, it can be even more difficult to decide what to bring. If you’re planning a trip or are looking to elevate your fall fashion, then look no further than these capsule wardrobe essentials.

A capsule wardrobe is all about intentionally choosing pieces that can be worn together in a variety of different ways. From a staple trench that takes you from desk to dinner, to must-have jeans that work for a coffee date or a date date, your fall capsule wardrobe will help cut out those “I have nothing to wear” days.

And while a capsule wardrobe is both convenient and simple, don't be fooled into thinking that it has to be boring. The best capsule wardrobe is the one that helps you hone in on your unique style, lifestyle needs and fit preferences, and it will look different for everyone!

I’ve created this fall wardrobe cheat sheet to help you choose your capsule wardrobe essentials, and some styling ideas of how to style them together. Get ready to feel confident, stylish and efficient when packing for those cozy fall trips!

The Pieces: Capsule Wardrobe Essentials

Think of your capsule wardrobe as a “style kit” for fall, with pieces that can be mixed and matched to create the perfect look for any event. I believe that everyone needs a version of each of these fall staples:

  1. An oversized black blazer

Perfect over a slip dress or to dress up jeans and a tee, an oversized black blazer is the ultimate in effortless cool.

  1. A white button-down shirt

Wear it open over a t-shirt, with jeans and rolled sleeves, or let the collar peek out under a sweater. However you style it, a white button-down is a forever classic.

  1. Dark blue jeans

Denim is universal, but finding your favorite cut and wash is deeply personal. Some shade of dark blue is a great choice for a fall capsule wardrobe as it can be easily dressed up for evening events. Whether you prefer a wide leg, a bootcut, a cropped jean or a flare, your jeans will be your suitcase BFF.

  1. Breton striped top

A blue and white striped top is a timelessly chic piece that will freshen up any look. Wear it under a blazer for work or with a trench on the weekend, and channel your inner French girl. I love this one from AYR!

  1. Black trousers

Black pants are the perfect alternative to jeans. Wear them with a T-shirt for a cool, casual look, or throw on your crisp white shirt for a refined work outfit. The waist height and leg width is a totally personal preference, so choose a pair that makes you feel your best!

  1. Black slip dress

The slip dress is the LBD of the capsule wardrobe. Wear it with heels on a night out or under a sweater with sneakers to weekend brunch. Choose a neckline and length that makes you feel chic! I love this one from Mara Hoffman - the bias cut is flattering on everyone.

  1. Neutral sweater

Nothing says fall like a cozy sweater, and no capsule wardrobe would be complete without a comfortable knit. The ultimate layering piece, a sweat can be worn over any top or dress and under any jacket to keep you warm while looking cool. Consider choosing a gray, taupe or camel color that complements your skin tone in wool, cashmere or a cotton blend.

  1. Statement top

Remember, a capsule wardrobe doesn’t have to be boring! Adding in a cool top allows you to express your bold style, while making sure that you’re not buying single-wear items. This colorful top is a great option, and can be worn with either black trousers or jeans for a fun, statement look.

  1. Trench coat

There’s a reason that trench coats are always in style, and it’s because they are the perfect layering piece for any fall outfit. Throw yours on over any outfit for a celeb street style look (that actually protects you from the weather!) The length and cut you choose will be dependent on your body proportions and style, so you can really make the classic trench your own.

  1. Crossbody bag

Whether you’re walking the dog or heading out to party, a crossbody bag will complete any outfit. A simple leather bag in a neutral color like cream, tan or black will be your travel staple, holding all your essentials comfortably. I love this cream bucket bag—it’s both unique and versatile.

  1. Belt

It may seem simple, but a belt can really be the finishing touch on even the most simple outfit. Whether you choose a thin or thick belt or a black or brown belt, this timeless accessory will pull together even jeans and a tee.

  1. White sneakers

Whether you have a full day of sightseeing or are just heading out for a coffee, you can’t go wrong with white sneakers. Whether you choose high top, low top, chunky, or refined sneakers, they’re a great way to show off your style with a capsule wardrobe.

  1. Black heels

And to complete your fall capsule wardrobe essentials, you can’t go past a pair of black heels. Wear them with jeans to dress up a lunchtime look, or feel soirée-ready by pairing them with your slip dress. Whether you choose high pumps, chic kitten heels, or stylish Mary Janes, black heels are always in style.
